Khanom farang kudi chin (Thai: ขนมฝรั่งกุฎีจีน) is a special Thai cake. It was inspired by Portuguese desserts. This influence began a long time ago, during the Ayutthaya era. This was when King Narai ruled, from 1633 to 1688. Ayutthaya was a very busy trading city. It had strong connections with many European countries. These included France, Spain, Holland, and Portugal.

A Sweet History

How the Cake Came to Thailand

After the fall of Ayutthaya, people moved to a new capital. This new city was on the west side of the Chao Phraya River. Today, this area is known as Thonburi. Among the people who moved were many Portuguese people. King Taksin, who ruled from 1767 to 1782, allowed them to settle there. He also let them marry Thai people.

The Kudi Chin Community

The descendants of these Portuguese settlers are now the Thai-Portuguese community. They live in a place called Kudi Chin. Even today, they keep many traditions from their ancestors. This includes their Christian faith and some Western customs. This special cake is one of those traditions.
