Kharkiv National Medical University (Ukrainian: Харківський національний медичний університет) is a big medical school in Kharkiv, Ukraine. It used to be called Kharkiv Medical Institute. This university teaches students how to become doctors and other medical professionals.

Sadly, in March 2022, many of the university's buildings were badly damaged because of the Russian invasion into Ukraine.

More than 700 teachers work at the university. Many of them are top scientists and doctors in Ukraine. Some have even won important awards for their work in science. Since 1951, the university has welcomed students from all over the world. They come from countries in Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Right now, about 3,400 students from other countries study here. They learn about medicine, nursing, and dentistry. Some even come back after their first degree to specialize in areas like orthopedics, surgery, oncology, or pediatrics. The university has helped over 5,000 specialists from 86 different countries become doctors.

History of the University

The story of this medical school in Kharkiv goes back more than 200 years! It started as part of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University in 1805. The Russian Tsar Alexander I signed the paper to create it.

In the 1800s, famous doctors and scientists taught here. They were the first in the Russian Empire to do special operations, like surgery on the open heart. They also made big scientific discoveries. The university built special buildings for learning, like an anatomy theater in 1887. Later, in 1896, they built four clinics for different medical areas: therapy, surgery, obstetrics, and eye care.

In 1910, professors from the medical faculty helped start the Women's Medical Institute. This was important because it allowed women to get a higher education in medicine.

In 1920, the medical part of Kharkiv University joined with the Women's Medical Institute. They formed the Kharkiv Medical Academy, which later became the Kharkiv Medical Institute. Many streets in Kharkiv are named after the amazing teachers and scientists who worked here. Some of these include physiologist Danilevsky V.Ya. and surgeon Trinkler N.P.

Teachers from the university also helped create many important research centers and hospitals. These places are now used for both scientific work and medical care by the university's departments.

Since 1951, the university has been training students from other countries. Over 3,600 international students have graduated from here.

In 1994, the Kharkiv Medical Institute became the Kharkiv State Medical University. It earned the highest possible rating for its quality. In 2007, it was given the special "National status," showing its importance to Ukraine.
