Kharp (Russian: Харп) is a small town in Russia. Its name, "Kharp," means "aurora" in the local Nenets language, which is fitting for a place so far north! It is located in the Priuralsky District of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. This town sits on the bank of the Sob River, close to the Polar Urals mountains. In 2010, about 6,413 people lived there.

Location and Special Features

Kharp is quite remote, located in the northern parts of Russia. The closest big city is Salekhard, which is about 45 kilometers (28 miles) away. Because of its northern location, Kharp is known for being home to some special facilities. These include institutions like IK-18, also known as "Polar Owl," and IK-3, called "Polar Wolf." These are some of the most northern facilities of their kind in Russia.

A Look at Kharp's History

The story of Kharp began during the time of Joseph Stalin, a former leader of the Soviet Union. The town was first built by people who were part of special labor camps called the Gulag.

The settlement started as a railway station named Podgornaya. It had a few houses for railway workers. Over time, it grew. On January 24, 1968, the Podgornaya station officially became the rural village of Kharp. A few years later, in December 1971, a local council was formed to help manage the village.

In 1981, Kharp became part of the administration of the nearby city of Labytnangi. It was then recognized as a "workers' village." Since 1992, Kharp has had its own local administration, managing the town's daily life.

A notable event in Kharp's recent history occurred on February 16, 2024. A well-known political figure, Alexei Navalny, passed away while he was at the "Polar Wolf" facility in Kharp.
