The Khyex River is a river in British Columbia, Canada. It's like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger one, the Skeena River. The Khyex River starts high up in the Coast Mountains and flows south for about 50 kilometers (31 miles). It eventually joins the Skeena River near places like Port Essington, Prince Rupert, and Terrace. The area of land that drains into the Khyex River, called its watershed, is about 442 square kilometers (171 square miles).
Almost all of the land that drains into the Khyex River is protected within the Khyex Conservancy. The Khyex River's watershed is also part of the traditional lands claimed by the Tsimshian Lax-kw'alaams First Nation and the Metlakatla First Nation.

River's Journey & Landscape
The Khyex River begins in the tall, icy peaks of the Kitimat Ranges. These mountains are part of the larger Coast Mountains. Some of the peaks where the river starts include Mount Campagnolo and Khyex Tower.
Flowing South
As the Khyex River flows south, it gathers water from many smaller streams. The biggest of these smaller streams is called Arden Creek.
Land Around the River
The land around the Khyex River is a mix of different types of areas. About a third of the land is rocky or bare, and another third is covered in evergreen trees. There are also areas of grassland and some parts with snow and glaciers.
Local Communities
Several Indian reserves are located along the Khyex River. These include Kyex 64, Khyex 8, Ksagwisgwas 62, and Ksagwisgwas 63.
Wildlife in the Khyex River
The Khyex River is home to many types of fish, especially different kinds of salmon and trout.
Fish Species
You can find several types of salmon here, such as Chinook salmon, chum salmon, coho salmon, and pink salmon. There are also steelhead trout. Another important fish found in the river is the eulachon, which is a type of smelt.
Natural Barriers
About 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) up the river, there's a long canyon with waterfalls and fast-moving water. This natural barrier makes it hard for fish that swim upriver from the ocean (like salmon) to reach the very top parts of the Khyex River watershed.
