History of KiZmom and Nickelodeon
How Nickelodeon Shows Started in Korea
Before there was a special Nickelodeon channel in South Korea, many of its popular shows were already on TV. Different TV channels in Korea showed these cartoons to their viewers.
Nickelodeon Shows on Korean TV Channels
Some of Nickelodeon's original cartoons were shown on channels like EBS1. These included shows like Rugrats, Rocket Power, The Wild Thornberrys, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Dora the Explorer.
Jimmy Neutron was broadcast on MBC. Also, a Korean version of Blue's Clues from Nick Jr. was shown on KBS2. The Korean versions of these shows were made by or for these TV channels. They were not specifically called "Nickelodeon" blocks at that time.
Nickelodeon Block on JEI TV
Later, a special TV channel called JEI TV started showing Nickelodeon programs. This happened after JEI TV made a deal with Viacom, the company that owns Nickelodeon.
At first, JEI TV showed Nickelodeon programs that other Korean channels didn't have. But over time, they also started showing their own Korean versions of shows that were already on EBS. These new Korean versions were made by a company called Arirang TV Media.
Nickelodeon Southeast Asia on SkyLife
From 2003 to 2006, a satellite TV provider called SkyLife offered the Southeast Asian version of Nickelodeon. SkyLife chose this channel after they couldn't agree on a deal to keep showing Tooniverse.
The channel started testing in January 2003 and officially launched in March. However, in 2005, SkyLife decided to remove Nickelodeon Southeast Asia. This was because they made a deal to launch a new channel called Animax in South Korea. SkyLife didn't carry the new South Korean Nickelodeon channel until 2014.
Launch of Nickelodeon Korea
A dedicated Nickelodeon channel for South Korea began testing on August 1, 2005. It officially launched later that year. This channel was created through a deal between On-Media and MTV Networks Asia.
The channel was first called "Nick" and was only available on cable TV. Around the same time, a special block of Nickelodeon shows also started on On-Media's Tooniverse channel.
In 2008, the channel became part of C&M Communication. This happened when On-Media sold some of its shares in the company that owned Nick. Even so, the Nickelodeon block on Tooniverse continued. In 2010, the channel officially changed its name to Nickelodeon, using the new logo that had been revealed in the USA.
In September 2011, SBS, a major Korean TV company, became the official partner of Viacom in South Korea. SBS bought shares in the company that owned Nickelodeon, and the joint company was renamed SBS Viacom. This made Nickelodeon a part of SBS.
Rebranding to KiZmom
On June 30, 2022, the Nickelodeon channel in South Korea changed its name to KiZmom. At the same time, all the Nickelodeon shows moved to CJ ENM's streaming service, TVING. They also moved to Nickelodeon's sister channel, Tooniverse.
On the same day, SBS MTV, another channel owned by SBS, also changed its name to SBS M. This meant they no longer used the MTV brand.
