Kianida Reef (which is called rif Kianida in Bulgarian) is a rocky area in the ocean. It's about 350 meters long and 140 meters wide. That's like three and a half football fields long! This reef is located near Rugged Island in the South Shetland Islands. These islands are part of Antarctica.
The name "Kianida" comes from an old story. It's named after a "phantom island" called Kianida or Cianeis. A phantom island is an island that people thought existed but was never found. This name appeared on a map from 1467! Long ago, in the early 1800s, people who hunted seals visited this area.
Where is Kianida Reef?
Kianida Reef is found in a place called Osogovo Bay. It's off the southeast tip of Rugged Island. Its exact location is 62°38′32″S 61°12′33″W / 62.64222°S 61.20917°W.
It's about 440 meters southwest of a spot called Radev Point. It's also about 1.65 kilometers west-southwest of Astor Island. And it's 3.5 kilometers north-northwest of Devils Point on Livingston Island. Experts from Spain made detailed maps of this area in 1992. Bulgarian experts also mapped it in 2009 and 2017.
