Musampa's Club Journey
Early Days at Ajax and Bordeaux
Kizito Musampa started his football journey in Kinshasa, Zaire. He joined the famous AFC Ajax youth academy, which is known for training many great players. He played 31 games for Ajax's main team over two seasons, scoring six goals. One of his goals, against NAC Breda, was special because it was the first goal scored by Ajax in their new stadium, the Johan Cruyff Arena.
In 1997, Musampa moved to Girondins Bordeaux in France. He hoped that playing there would help him get picked for the Netherlands national team for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. However, the coach at the time, Guus Hiddink, did not choose him for the team.
Playing in Spain: Málaga and Atlético
After two seasons in France, Musampa decided to move to Spain. He joined Málaga CF in 1999. He played 94 games for Málaga and scored 22 goals over four seasons.
In 2003, Atlético Madrid bought him for about €3 million. He signed a five-year contract, thinking it would be a great step for his career. In his first year with Atlético, he played 26 matches and scored two goals. However, in the next season (2004), he didn't play as much, only appearing in eight games.
Time at Manchester City
In January 2005, Musampa joined Manchester City in England's Premier League. He moved there on loan because he wasn't playing much at Atlético Madrid. In his first six months, he scored three goals in 14 games.
His first goal for City was a fantastic shot in the last minute against Liverpool. This goal won the game and was the first victory for Stuart Pearce as City's manager. Musampa also scored against Aston Villa in a 2-1 win and an equalizing goal against Middlesbrough.
In June 2005, Musampa agreed to stay at Manchester City for another season. He started the new season as a regular player. But by December, he began to play less often. He sometimes played in central midfield instead of his usual winger position. After the 2005–06 season ended, he went back to Atlético Madrid. His teammates at City sometimes called him 'Chris'.
Later Career: Trabzonspor and AZ
On August 30, 2006, Musampa signed a three-year contract with Trabzonspor, a club in Turkey. He joined them for free.
After leaving Trabzonspor, Musampa trained with Sunderland in England for a while, but he didn't sign a contract with them. He then returned to the Netherlands and trained with Eredivisie team AZ. In November 2007, he signed a contract with AZ for the rest of that season. However, he was released from his contract on January 1, 2008.
Playing in South Korea and Final Clubs
Musampa tried out for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer (MLS) but was not successful. In March 2008, he signed a two-year contract with FC Seoul in South Korea's K-League. His time in South Korea was short. He played only three league games and two League Cup games before he and the club decided to end his contract in June 2008.
On March 14, 2009, Musampa returned to professional football, signing with Willem II Tilburg in the Netherlands. In September 2009, he had a trial with French team FC Metz. He scored one goal in a friendly match, but the club did not sign him. After this, Kizito Musampa announced that he was retiring from professional football.
International Youth Career
Musampa played for the Netherlands U20 team in the 1995 FIFA World Youth Championship. He played in all three group matches, but his team did not make it past the group stage.
He then became a very important player for the Netherlands Under-21s. He played 25 games and scored 8 goals for them. This means he is one of the top 10 players for both games played and goals scored at that level. His good performance while on loan at Manchester City even led to him being called up to the main Netherlands squad. He was selected for games against Romania and Finland, but he did not play in either match.
