Kiki Musampa's Football Journey
Starting Strong: Ajax and Bordeaux
Kiki Musampa was born in Kinshasa, which is now in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He began his football journey at the famous AFC Ajax youth academy in the Netherlands. He played 31 games for Ajax's senior team over two seasons, scoring six goals. One of his goals, against NAC Breda, was special because it was the very first goal scored in Ajax's new stadium, the Johan Cruyff Arena.
In 1997, Musampa moved to the French club Girondins Bordeaux. He hoped to gain more experience there and possibly be chosen for the Dutch national team for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. However, he was not selected by the coach at the time, Guus Hiddink.
Spanish Adventures: Málaga and Atlético
After two seasons in France, Musampa decided to move to Spain. He joined Málaga CF in 1999. He played 94 games for Málaga and scored 22 goals during his four seasons there.
In 2003, Atlético Madrid bought him for €3 million. He saw this as a great step for his career. In his first season with Atlético, he played 26 matches and scored two goals. However, in his second season, he didn't play as much, appearing in only eight games.
English Premier League: Manchester City
In January 2005, Musampa moved to Manchester City in the Premier League on loan. He had become a less regular player at Atlético. In his first six months with City, he scored three goals in 14 games.
His first goal for City was a "spectacular volley" in the final minute against Liverpool. This goal gave Stuart Pearce his first win as City's manager. He also scored against Aston Villa in a 2-1 win and an equalizer against Middlesbrough.
In June 2005, Musampa agreed to stay at Manchester City for a second season. He started the new season as a regular player. But by December, he began to play less often. He often played in central midfield during this time. At the end of the 2005–06 season, he returned to Atlético. His teammates at City gave him the nickname 'Chris'.
Later Career: Turkey, Netherlands, and Asia
On August 30, 2006, Musampa signed a three-year contract with the Turkish club Trabzonspor. He joined them on a free transfer.
After leaving Trabzonspor, Musampa trained with English Premiership team Sunderland. However, he did not sign with them. He then returned to the Netherlands and trained with Eredivisie club AZ. In November 2007, he signed a contract with AZ for the rest of the season, but he was released on January 1, 2008.
After an unsuccessful tryout with Toronto FC in Major League Soccer, he signed a two-year contract with K-League team FC Seoul in South Korea in March 2008. His time in South Korea was short. He played only three league games and two League Cup games before his contract was ended by agreement in June 2008.
On March 14, 2009, Musampa returned to professional football. He signed for Willem II Tilburg in the Netherlands. In September 2009, he had a trial with French club FC Metz and scored in a friendly match. However, the club did not sign him. After this, Kiki Musampa announced his retirement from professional football.
Playing for His Country
Kiki Musampa was part of the Netherlands U20 team at the 1995 FIFA World Youth Championship. He played in all three group matches, but the team did not move past the group stage.
Musampa became a very important player for the Netherlands Under-21s. He played 25 games and scored 8 goals for them. He is currently among the top 10 players for both games played and goals scored at that level. His good performance while on loan at Manchester City led to him being called up to the senior Netherlands squad. This was for games against Romania and Finland, but he did not play in either match.
