Kildare is a small town located in Kay County, Oklahoma, in the United States. In 2010, about 100 people lived there. This was a small increase from the 92 people who lived there in 2000. By 2020, the population was 86 people.
History of Kildare
Kildare started thanks to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. In 1892, they built some important buildings here. These included a place for workers to live, a small house for the station agent, a tool shed, and a train station. This was just one year before the Cherokee Outlet area was opened for new settlers.
On September 16, 1893, the Cherokee Strip land run began. The railroad said they sold 8,000 tickets to Kildare for that day. Because of this, Kildare grew very quickly. A post office opened on October 24, 1893. The town officially became a town on March 2, 1905.
However, Kildare faced a big challenge: a lack of water. This problem limited how much the town could grow. The most people ever recorded living in Kildare was 216 in 1910. Over the years, fires destroyed the main business area three times. Each time, fewer businesses were rebuilt. The town was named after County Kildare in Ireland.
Geography of Kildare
