A Look Back at Kildare's Past
Kildare started as a small settlement because of the big sawmills nearby. In the early 1870s, it became a stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway. A post office opened in Kildare in 1874. It was named after one of the important people from the railroad.
Early Growth and Changes
By 1884, Kildare had two churches and about 200 people living there. A railway track, called the Kildare and Linden Railway, was built in 1890. This helped the Texas Pacific line reach Linden. That same year, Kildare's population grew a lot, reaching 500 residents! However, by 1900, the number dropped to 214.
Kildare as a Lumber Hub
The population stayed pretty steady until the late 1950s. By then, Kildare was an important place for shipping lumber. But the number of people living there kept going down. In 1964, only 125 residents remained, and the railroad station closed a decade later. At that time, Kildare had a gas station, a store, two churches, and a few houses spread out.
Recent Population Numbers
In 1990, Kildare had just one business and 49 residents. This number stayed the same in 2000. However, the population grew to 106 people by 2010.
