Kilgore is a small village located in Cherry County, Nebraska, in the United States. According to the 2020 census, 63 people lived there. It is known for its quiet, rural setting.

History of Kilgore

Kilgore was first established in 1883. It was originally called Boulware. This happened when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad built tracks to this spot.

In 1885, the village's name was changed to Georgia. Then, in 1893, Georgia officially became an incorporated village. This means it gained its own local government.

The name was changed again in 1904 to Kilgore. This was because the post office worried that "Georgia" would be confused with the state of Georgia. The new name, Kilgore, was chosen to honor a family of early settlers in the area.

Kilgore's Busy Years

  • A full-time railroad station and a grain elevator were also important.
  • Two passenger trains came through each way every day.
  • The community built a brick schoolhouse in 1929. This school taught students from kindergarten to 12th grade. At that time, over 250 people lived in Kilgore.

However, as railroads became less important, the village's busy times ended. Today, Kilgore is a much smaller community.
