Kim Chaek's Early Life and Fight
Kim Chaek was born in a place called Sŏngjin. When he was young, he joined a special kind of fighting called guerrilla warfare in 1927. This was a fight against the Japanese who had taken control of Korea. He fought alongside another famous leader, Kim Il-Sung, in a region called Manchuria.
In 1932, he became part of a group known as the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army. This group worked to resist the Japanese forces.
Moving to the Soviet Union
By 1940, to escape the Japanese military, Kim Chaek moved to the Soviet Union. He lived in a city called Khabarovsk. While there, he met with Kim Il-Sung again. Together, they helped form a special military group called the 88th Special Brigade.
After World War II ended, Kim Chaek returned to Korea with the Soviet Army. He quickly became a high-ranking leader in the Workers' Party of Korea.
