Kim Chaek (born August 14, 1903 – died January 31, 1951) was an important person in North Korea. He was a fighter against Japanese rule, a general, a politician, and even a poet. His original name was Kim Hong-gye.

Kim Chaek's Early Life and Fight

Kim Chaek was born in a place called Sŏngjin. When he was young, he joined a special kind of fighting called guerrilla warfare in 1927. This was a fight against the Japanese who had taken control of Korea. He fought alongside another famous leader, Kim Il-Sung, in a region called Manchuria.

In 1932, he became part of a group known as the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army. This group worked to resist the Japanese forces.

Moving to the Soviet Union

By 1940, to escape the Japanese military, Kim Chaek moved to the Soviet Union. He lived in a city called Khabarovsk. While there, he met with Kim Il-Sung again. Together, they helped form a special military group called the 88th Special Brigade.

After World War II ended, Kim Chaek returned to Korea with the Soviet Army. He quickly became a high-ranking leader in the Workers' Party of Korea.

Role in North Korea's Government

In 1948, when North Korea was officially formed, Kim Chaek became the Minister of Industry. He also served as a Deputy Prime Minister under Kim Il-Sung. This meant he had a big role in building up the country's factories and businesses.

When the Korean War started, Kim Chaek became a commander for the North Korean troops. He led soldiers on the front lines of the war.

Kim Chaek's Death

Kim Chaek died in January 1951. The official reports stated he died after an American military air raid bombing. However, some historians believe there might have been other reasons for his death, possibly related to political disagreements at the time.

Remembering Kim Chaek

After his death, many places were named after Kim Chaek to honor his life and what he did for North Korea.

  • His birthplace, Haksong County, was combined with a nearby city and renamed Kim Chaek City.
  • A famous university, the Kim Chaek University of Technology, is named after him.
  • The Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex, a large industrial factory, also carries his name.
  • Even a sports venue, the Kim Chaek People's Stadium, is named in his honor.

In 1998, he was given the National Reunification Prize by North Korea. This award is given to people who have worked towards the idea of a united Korea.
