Hong Myong-hui (Hangul: 홍명희; Hanja: 洪命熹) was an important Korean writer. He was born on July 3, 1888, and passed away on March 5, 1968. He wrote many stories, especially during the time when Korea was under Japanese rule. Later, he became a well-known writer in North Korea.
Hong Myong-hui was born in a place called Dongbu-ri, in Goesan county. This area is in Chungcheongbuk-do. In 1919, he joined the 3.1 Movement. This was a big, peaceful protest where Koreans asked for independence from Japanese rule.
In the 1920s, Hong Myong-hui worked as an editor for a major newspaper. This newspaper was called Donga Ilbo. An editor helps decide what goes into the newspaper and checks the writing.
After the Korean War, Hong Myong-hui moved to North Korea. There, he held many important jobs in the government. He even served as a Vice Premier of the Cabinet. This means he was a high-ranking official who helped lead the country.
Hong Myong-hui is buried in a special place in Pyongyang, North Korea. It is called the Patriotic Martyrs' Cemetery. His grandson, Hong Sok-jung, also became a famous writer in North Korea.
