Kim Hunter (born Janet Cole; November 11, 1922 – September 11, 2002) was an American actress. She acted in plays, movies, and TV shows.

Kim Hunter became famous for playing a character named Stella Kowalski. She played Stella in the original play A Streetcar Named Desire. Then, she played Stella again in the 1951 movie version. For this role, she won two big awards: an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. Both were for Best Supporting Actress.

Many years later, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award. This was for her work on the TV show The Edge of Night. She also played a smart chimpanzee named Zira. She played Zira in the movie Planet of the Apes (1968) and its follow-up movies. These were Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) and Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971).

Early Life

Kim Hunter was born in Detroit, Michigan. Her mother, Grace Lind, was a talented piano player. Her father, Donald Cole, worked as an engineer. Kim Hunter went to Miami Beach High School.

Acting Career

Kim Hunter's first movie role was in 1943. It was in a film called The Seventh Victim. Her first main role was in the 1946 British fantasy movie A Matter of Life and Death.

In 1947, she played Stella Kowalski in the play A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway. When she played Stella again in the 1951 movie, she won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. These were both for Best Supporting Actress. In 1948, she became one of the first members of the new Actors Studio. This was a special place for actors to train.

In the 1950s, Kim Hunter faced a difficult time. She was unfairly prevented from working in movies and TV. This happened during a period when some people in Hollywood were wrongly accused of certain political beliefs. This time is known as the Hollywood blacklist.

After this difficult period, her career started to grow again. In 1956, she was in a TV play called "Requiem for a Heavyweight". This show won many awards. She also appeared in many other TV shows. These included Rawhide, The Eleventh Hour, and Bonanza.

Kim Hunter also played Dr. Zira, the kind chimpanzee scientist. She played this role in the 1968 movie Planet of the Apes. She also played Zira in two more movies in that series. She was also in several TV soap operas. One of her most famous soap opera roles was Nola Madison in The Edge of Night. For this role, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 1980.

Her last major movie role was in 1997. It was in Clint Eastwood's film, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Personal Life

Kim Hunter was married two times. Her first husband was William Baldwin, a pilot. They married in 1944 and had a daughter named Kathryn. They divorced two years later. In 1951, she married Robert Emmett. They had a son named Sean. Kim and Robert sometimes acted in plays together. Robert passed away in 2000.

Kim Hunter died in New York City on September 11, 2002. She was 79 years old and passed away from a heart attack.
