This film is part of a larger story. It continues the adventures from Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970). After this movie, the story continues in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.
There was also a comic book series that connected this movie to Star Trek. It was called Star Trek/Planet of the Apes: The Primate Directive. This comic helped explain what happened between the second and third movies. It was published from December 2014 to April 2015.
