Albert Salmi (born March 11, 1928 – died April 22, 1990) was an American actor. He performed in plays, movies, and TV shows. He was known as a character actor. This means he often played interesting, unique roles instead of the main hero. He appeared in more than 150 films and TV productions.
Early Life
Albert Salmi was born and grew up in Brooklyn, New York City. His parents were immigrants from Finland. He went to Haaren High School in Manhattan.
After serving in the United States Army, Salmi decided to become an actor. He studied a special acting style called method acting. He learned this at the Actors Studio in Manhattan. His teacher was Lee Strasberg.
Acting Career
In 1955, Salmi starred in a play called Bus Stop on Broadway. Broadway is famous for its live plays in New York City. Critics really liked his acting.
He was even asked to be in the movie version of Bus Stop. This movie starred the famous actress Marilyn Monroe. But Salmi said no because he preferred acting on stage. Another actor, Don Murray, took the role instead.
Even though he was in many movies and TV shows, Salmi believed that stage acting was the best. He felt it was more important than film or TV work.
One of his first TV appearances was in a live show. It was an adaptation of the book Bang the Drum Slowly in 1956. He acted alongside Paul Newman in this show.
Salmi also had memorable roles on the TV series The Twilight Zone. He appeared in episodes like "Of Late I Think of Cliffordville" and "A Quality of Mercy".
In 1963, he played two characters in an episode of the CBS series Rawhide. From 1964 to 1965, he was in the TV series Daniel Boone. He played a character named Yadkin.
He also appeared twice as a pirate named Alonzo P. Tucker on Lost in Space. In 1967, he was in an episode of Gunsmoke. He won an award for his performance in Gunsmoke. It was called a Western Heritage Award.
From 1974 to 1976, Salmi co-starred in a legal TV show called Petrocelli. He played a local investigator named Pete Ritter.
Albert Salmi was in many movies too. Some of his film roles include The Unforgiven (1960) and Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971). He also appeared in Caddyshack (1980) and Brubaker (1980). He played Greil in the fantasy movie Dragonslayer (1981).
Personal Life
Salmi met actress Peggy Ann Garner in 1955. They were both acting in a touring play of Bus Stop. They got married on May 18, 1956, in New York City. Their only child, Catherine Ann Salmi, was born in 1957. Catherine passed away in 1995.
Salmi married Roberta Pollock Taper in 1964. They had two daughters, Elizabeth and Jennifer. In 1983, the family moved from Los Angeles to Spokane, Washington. Salmi started to act less often, taking only a few roles. He also taught acting and performed in local plays.
In February 1990, Albert and Roberta Salmi separated. On April 23, 1990, Albert Salmi and Roberta were found deceased in their Spokane home. A friend had come to check on Roberta.
Salmi's funeral was held on April 26. He was cremated and his ashes were placed in a cemetery in Spokane. His marker says "Our Beloved Dad".
