Playing for Clubs
Kim Jin-kyu started playing football in elementary school. His older brother inspired him. After high school, he went straight to play in the K League. This is South Korea's top football league.
Early Career and First Goal
He joined Jeonnam Dragons in 2003. He quickly made a name for himself. He became the youngest player to score a goal for his team. In 2005, he moved to Japan. He played for Júbilo Iwata.
Returning to South Korea
In January 2007, Kim Jin-kyu came back to South Korea. He rejoined Jeonnam Dragons. He had promised his coach, Huh Jung-moo, he would return. The coach had helped him during a tough time.
Later in 2007, on July 25, he moved to FC Seoul. He played a big part in their success. FC Seoul won the K League championship in 2010.
Playing Abroad Again
In January 2011, Kim Jin-kyu went to China. He played for Dalian Shide. After a few months, his Korean manager left the team. Kim then lost his spot.
In July 2011, he was loaned to Ventforet Kofu in Japan. He played there for six months. After Kofu was moved to a lower league, he returned to FC Seoul.
In 2016, Kim Jin-kyu played in Thailand. He was loaned to Pattaya United. This was from Muangthong United.
Playing for His Country
Kim Jin-kyu also played for the South Korean national team. He was praised for his performance in the 2005 East Asian Football Championship.
Key Moments in International Games
In one important match, China scored first. But Kim Jin-kyu scored an equaliser. This meant the game ended in a tie. He helped prevent a loss for Korea.
He was chosen to play in the FIFA World Cup in 2006. However, his performance in a game against Switzerland was not as good as expected.
Captain of the Olympic Team
Kim Jin-kyu was made captain of the Korean national football team for the 2008 Summer Olympics. After becoming captain, he decided not to take free kicks during the tournament.
