Kim Kyu-Sik (born January 29, 1881 – died December 10, 1950) was an important Korean leader. He was a politician and a smart academic during the time when Korea was fighting for its freedom. He played a big role in the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.
Kim held many different jobs in this temporary government. He was a foreign minister, an ambassador, and even an education minister. From 1940, he served as the Vice President until the government ended in 1947.

Early Life and Education
Kim Kyu-sik was born in a place called Dongnae, which is now part of the city of Busan. He became an orphan when he was very young. An American missionary named H.G. Underwood helped him study from the age of six. Kim was given the Christian name "Johann."
Later, Kim traveled to the United States. He earned a bachelor's degree from Roanoke College in 1903. The next year, he got a master's degree in English literature from Princeton University.
Working for Korean Independence
In 1905, Kim returned to Korea and started teaching. In 1910, Japan took control of Korea. Because of this, Kim left Korea and went to China in 1913.
Kim Kyu-sik became a key member of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. This government was based in Shanghai, China. He eventually became its Vice-President. Kim was very good at English and even taught English to other members of the Provisional Government.
Later Years and Legacy
The Korean War started in 1950. During this war, Kim Kyu-sik was taken to North Korea. He reportedly died near a place called Manpo on December 10, 1950.
Many years later, in May 1988, Kim was honored for his work. He received the Republic of Korea Medal of the Order of Merit for National Foundation. This is the highest award a civilian can get in South Korea. In 1998, North Korea also honored him with the National Reunification Prize.
