Kim Yong-dae (Hangul: 김용대; born on October 11, 1979) is a former professional goalkeeper from South Korea. He played for many different football clubs during his career. Fans even gave him the nickname "Yong Der Sar." This was a nod to Edwin van der Sar, a famous goalkeeper from the Netherlands.

Kim Yong-dae's Club Career

Kim Yong-dae started his professional football journey in 2002. He joined the team Busan IPark right after finishing university.

Playing for Busan IPark

  • From 2002 to 2005, Kim played in 85 games for Busan IPark.
  • In 2004, his team won the 2004 Korean FA Cup. This was his first big trophy!

Time with Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma

  • In 2006, Kim moved to Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma.
  • He played there for three years, until 2009.
  • Even though he played in fewer games (53 appearances), his team had great success.
  • In his first year, 2006, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma became the K-League champions.
  • They also finished second in the K-League Cup that year.
  • In 2007 and 2009, his team was the runner-up in the K-League.

Military Service and Gwangju Sangmu

  • In South Korea, all men must complete two years of military service.
  • So, in 2008, Kim joined the army football club, Gwangju Sangmu.
  • He played 50 games for this team during his two-year service.

Success with FC Seoul

  • After his military service, Kim joined FC Seoul in 2010.
  • This is where he started playing much more often.
  • In 2010, he helped FC Seoul win the 2010 K-League and the 2010 K-League Cup.
  • He was also chosen as the best goalkeeper in the K-League that year.
  • In 2012, Kim won the 2012 K-League again with FC Seoul.
  • For the second time, he was voted the best goalkeeper in the K-League. He was a very important player for his team.

Key Moments in 2013

  • In 2013, Kim showed his amazing skills.
  • On July 31, he was the "Man of the Match" against Jeju United. He made many saves and even stopped a penalty kick!
  • He also helped FC Seoul beat Suwon Bluewings in a big match, which they hadn't done in three years.
  • Kim made a "super save" against a player from Al-Ahli on August 21, 2013. Fans were very impressed.

AFC Champions League Final

  • In the 2013 AFC Champions League Final, Kim and FC Seoul played against Guangzhou Evergrande from China.
  • The games ended in ties (2-2 and 1-1).
  • Kim made fantastic saves in both matches.
  • However, Guangzhou Evergrande won the championship because of the away-goal rule. This meant Kim and FC Seoul finished as runners-up.

Kim Yong-dae's International Career

Kim Yong-dae also played for the South Korean national team.

  • He was the second-choice goalkeeper for South Korea in the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
  • In 2007, he hoped to play in the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, but another goalkeeper, Lee Woon-Jae, played all the matches.
  • Later, a new goalkeeper, Jung Sung-Ryong, became the main choice for South Korea. Kim often sat on the bench.
  • He was called up for a World Cup qualifying match in 2013 but did not play.
