Her Acting Journey
Kim Young-ae started her acting career in 1971. She joined a special program at MBC, a big TV network in South Korea. Her first role was in a TV show called Chief Inspector, which was a police drama. After that, she became very busy, acting in lots of films and television series.
In the 1970s and early 1980s, Kim Young-ae was often seen on the big screen. She appeared in movies like Long Live the Island Frogs (1973), Wang Sib Ri, My Hometown (1976), and Suddenly at Midnight (1981).
As she got older, she started working more on television. Some of her most well-known TV dramas include Queen Min (1973), Ilchul (1989), Magpie-in-law (1991), and The Brothers' River (1996). Later, she starred in popular shows like Hwang Jini (2006), Royal Family (2011), and Moon Embracing the Sun (2012).
In 2009, she received a lot of praise for her role in the movie Aeja, also known as Goodbye Mom. She played a strong mother who was very sick but had a complicated relationship with her daughter. Another important role was in the 2013 film The Attorney, where she played a restaurant owner. For her amazing work in these films, Kim Young-ae won awards for Best Supporting Actress at big events like the Grand Bell Awards and the Blue Dragon Film Awards.
Beyond Acting
In 2006, Kim Young-ae took a break from acting to work as the vice chairman of a cosmetics company called Chamtowon. This company made beauty products like soap and mud packs.
However, the company faced a big problem. In 2008, a TV show falsely reported that Chamtowon's mud products contained dangerous levels of heavy metals. This false report caused the company to lose a lot of money and almost go out of business. They had to close their factory and many workers lost their jobs.
Later, the government's food and drug agency confirmed that the report was wrong. The court ruled in favor of Chamtowon, and the TV network had to correct their mistake. Even though the company won the lawsuit, it was hard for them to fully recover from the financial damage.
Her Final Years
Sadly, Kim Young-ae passed away from pancreatic cancer on April 9, 2017. She continued to act even while battling her illness, showing her incredible dedication to her craft.
