Kimberly is a city located in Jefferson County, Alabama, in the United States. In 2020, about 3,841 people lived there.
Kimberly's Story
The city of Kimberly started around a special stop for horse-drawn carriages, called a stagecoach station. This station was built in the 1830s and was used until 1865. Back then, the area was known as Kennelsville.
Later, the settlement changed its name to Jefferson. This was probably because of a nearby coal mine called Old Jefferson. But in the late 1880s, the town's post office moved to a place called Morris.
In 1905, the people of the town decided to change the name again. They chose Kimberly because another town in Alabama was already named Jefferson. By 1910, about 900 people lived in Kimberly.
Coal mines were very important for jobs in Kimberly. They were busy until the 1940s and then slowly closed down in the 1950s. Another big employer was the Dixie Firebrick Company, which started in the 1930s. This company later closed in the mid-1970s.
Kimberly officially became a town in 1952. Sadly, many old town records were lost in a fire at the city hall in 1989. On June 29, 2011, Kimberly became a city. This happened because its population grew from 1,801 people in 2000 to 2,711 people in 2010. Alabama law says that if a town grows big enough, it can become a city.
