Kimberly Drew's Career in Art

In March 2011, while still in college, Drew started a Tumblr blog called Black Contemporary Art. She and others shared information about Black artists. These artists were on museum websites but did not have much online presence. Drew wanted them to be "part of a recorded history." Drew sees herself as a "curator" of Black art and experiences. Artsy has praised her for working towards fairness for all races in the art world. She has talked about how important it is to connect art with activism and protests. This was especially true after major events involving Black Americans.

Kimberly Drew's Books
Kimberly Drew and journalist Jenna Wortham started working together through Twitter messages. They co-edited and released the book Black Futures. This book took five years to create. It is a collection of art from over 100 Black creators. They answered the question, "What does it mean to be Black and alive, right now?" Their book shows a time when Black empowerment is strong, even with long-term unfair systems. Drew and Wortham wanted to show how Black culture is everywhere in daily life. They also wanted to show that Blackness has no limits. Black Futures was published by Random House's One World in December 2020.
On June 2, 2020, Drew released her first book, This Is What I Know About Art. This book is for young adults. It was published by Penguin Workshop.
