Kingsbury Run facts for kids
Kingsbury Run is an area on the southeast side of Cleveland, Ohio. It's close to the suburb of Shaker Heights and stretches west through Kinsman Road. This area used to have a natural waterway that helped drain rainwater from places like Maple Heights and Warrensville Heights into the Cuyahoga River.
Kingsbury Run was named after James Kingsbury, an early settler in the Western Reserve region. He was the first person to live in Newburgh in 1797. Today, the RTA Rapid Transit train travels through Kingsbury Run on its way to Public Square in downtown Cleveland.

The Kingsbury Run valley is crossed by the Sidaway Bridge. This bridge is located between Sidaway Avenue and East 65th Street. It was Cleveland's first and only suspension bridge designed for people to walk across. A suspension bridge hangs from cables that are supported by tall towers.
Connecting Neighborhoods
The Sidaway Bridge was important because it connected the Jackowo and Kinsman Road neighborhoods. It made it easier for people to travel between these areas on foot.
Why the Bridge Closed
Sadly, the bridge was damaged in 1966 during a time of social unrest in Cleveland. Because of this damage, the bridge was closed and has remained closed ever since. The continued closure of the bridge even played a role in a judge's decision about efforts to integrate schools in the Cleveland schools.
