What is Kingston's Climate Like?
Kingston has a climate with big changes in temperature throughout the year. Summers are warm to hot and sometimes humid. Winters are cold, and can even be very cold. This type of weather is called a humid continental climate.
Kingston's History
Kingston is named after Thomas Rice King. He moved to Piute County from Fillmore with his five sons and their families. They wanted to create a special community called a United Order. In the 1870s, Brigham Young encouraged people to live together in these communal United Order communities. The King families' United Order worked from 1876 to 1883. Kingston officially became an incorporated town in 1935.
Life in the United Order Community
The people of the United Order built the village of Kingston on ten acres of land. This was located east of Circleville.
The town had a main community building. This building was used for school, dances, church, and other meetings. Other important buildings surrounded it, like:
- a blacksmith shop
- a milk house
- a bakery
- a tailor shop
- a post office
- a carpenter shop
- a general store
The first homes were log houses with dirt floors and roofs. They were built in a way that formed a fort around a ten-acre block. In the center of the block was a large communal kitchen and dining hall, about seventy feet long. A big vegetable garden was also nearby.
Kingston's Industrial Center
Just east of Kingston, the community had its industrial area. Here, they built important facilities such as:
- a flour mill
- a tannery (for making leather)
- a sawmill (for cutting wood)
- a woolen mill (for making wool products)
Before this, a man named Isaac Riddle had built a burr mill in the area. However, it wasn't big enough for everyone's needs. So, the community built a new gristmill at the entrance of Kingston Canyon. The community also had a dairy farm about 20 miles from Kingston, near where the town of Antimony is today.
