The Kinnel Water is a river in Scotland. It flows through the area of Dumfries and Galloway, which is in the old shire of Dumfriesshire.

Where the Kinnel Water Starts and Ends

The Kinnel Water begins its journey high up in the Lowther Hills. This is about two kilometers north of a hill called Queensberry. It's also quite close to the border of another area, South Lanarkshire.

Interestingly, the Kinnel Water starts near the River Clyde. The Clyde flows to the northwest, and the Kinnel Water's source is only about 400 meters away from it.

At first, the river flows mostly southeast through a hilly area. After about nine kilometers, it changes direction and heads south. For some distance, the A701 road runs right beside it before crossing over the river.

The Kinnel Water then flows through a rich, fertile land. It eventually joins the River Annan about two kilometers northeast of Lochmaben. The River Annan then flows into the Solway Firth, which is part of the Irish Sea.

The Kinnel Water is about 32 kilometers long. From its start to its end, the river drops about 402 meters in height.

Rivers and Towns Along the Way

Many smaller streams flow into the Kinnel Water as it travels. However, only one major river joins it: the Water of Ae. This river meets the Kinnel Water near the village of Templand.

The area around the Kinnel Water isn't very crowded. Because of this, the river doesn't pass through many towns. Templand is the largest village located along the river's path.

Cool Structures Along the Kinnel Water

There are some interesting old structures along the Kinnel Water. One of them is the Kinnel Bridge, which crosses the river near Templand. This bridge is very old and important, so it's protected as a special monument.

The Kinnel Bridge is made of stone and has three arches. It was built way back in 1723 and was made even bigger about 100 years later.

Also in Templand, the river flows past an old farmhouse called Ross Mains. This farmhouse is also a protected building. Further upstream, on the right side of the river, you can find Raehills House. This is a large, grand house that belongs to the family of the Earl of Annandale and Hartfell.
