History of Kipton Village
Kipton was first planned around 1852 by a man named Wm.W.Whitney. He hoped a new railroad would pass through his farm. He first called his new village "Binghamton," named after his old home in New York.
Changing Names and Railroads
For a while, the village was known as "Camden Station." Then, in 1862, its name changed to "Kipton Station." Later, people just called it "Kipton." For many years, Kipton was an important stop on the Southern Division of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad. However, this railroad line was closed down in 1976.
Today, the old railroad path is a rail trail called the North Coast Inland Trail. This means you can now walk or bike where trains once traveled!
The Great Kipton Train Wreck
Kipton was the site of a very important train wreck on April 18, 1891. This accident happened because the watches of the train engineers were not exactly the same. This led to a big problem: the trains didn't know exactly where the other was.
Because of this accident, strict rules were made in 1893 for railroad chronometers. These are very accurate clocks used by railroads. An Ohio Historical marker in Kipton Community Park tells the story of this collision.
