Kirkwood Mall is a large shopping mall located in Bismarck, North Dakota. It was first known as Kirkwood Plaza. This mall is the biggest shopping center in Bismarck.

Kirkwood Mall is about 850,000 square feet in size. This makes it the second largest mall in North Dakota. It has over 90 different shops for people to explore. The mall first opened its doors in 1970.

The main stores at Kirkwood Mall are called anchor stores. These include I. Keating Furniture & Flooring, Ashley HomeStore, Scheels All Sports, JCPenney, and Target. There is also one empty anchor store that used to be Herberger's. You can find the mall in the downtown area of Bismarck.

History of Kirkwood Mall

The Wachter family built Kirkwood Mall. It opened in 1970. Eddo Carlson was the mall's first manager. The Wachter family sold the mall in 1984.

When it first opened, the main stores were Montgomery Ward, F.W. Woolworth Company, and Herberger's. The mall was built in a "Y" shape. Herberger's was at the bottom part of the "Y".

Over the years, Kirkwood Mall has grown and changed. About ten years after it opened, a new section was added. This new part had a Target store and a J. C. Penney store. Herberger's also made its store much bigger. This happened after it closed its other location at Gateway Mall (Bismarck).

Changes to Main Stores

The main stores at Kirkwood Mall have changed several times. After Woolworth closed in 1985, the space became Dayton's. Then, in 2001, it changed to Marshall Field's. This happened when Target Corporation combined its biggest department stores under one name.

In 2005, the Marshall Field's store closed. The building was later torn down. A new Target store was built in its place. This new Target opened in the fall of 2006. Scheels All Sports then moved into the old Target space after it was updated.

Another original store was Montgomery Ward. After it closed, I. Keating Furniture took over its space in 2003. This furniture store is from Minot, North Dakota.

In 2012, a company called CBL & Associates bought the mall. They are a real estate company. In 2013, Scheels All Sports started a big expansion project. Victoria's Secret also made its store larger that summer.

In 2018, Herberger's announced it would close. Its parent company was going out of business. The Herberger's store closed in August 2018. In 2020, plans were announced to change the old Herberger's space. It will become a new area with restaurants like Chick-Fil-A, Five Guys, and Blaze Pizza. There will also be room for more shops.

Kirkwood Mall Today

Today, Kirkwood Mall has four main anchor stores. These are J. C. Penney, Target, Scheels All Sports, and I. Keating Furniture. The TJ Maxx store moved to a new shopping center. In its place, North Dakota's first Gold's Gym opened.

Kirkwood Mall also has over 90 smaller stores. You can find a few restaurants there too. CVS/pharmacy used to be in the mall. It moved to a new building near the mall in 2010.
