Kirtland is a small town located in San Juan County, New Mexico, United States. It used to be part of a larger area known as a "census-designated place" (CDP).
In 2020, the town of Kirtland had a population of 585 people. It is part of the Farmington area.

History of Kirtland
Kirtland was started in the early 1880s by settlers who were members of the Mormon faith. They named the new settlement after a place called Kirtland, Ohio.
The main street in Kirtland is called Brigham Street. This street is named after Brigham Young, an important leader in Mormon history. You can find a Mormon meetinghouse and a seminary building near Kirtland Central High School.
Some Mormon settlers had already moved to Fruitland as early as 1878. For a while, Fruitland was considered part of Kirtland for official census counts. Another early Mormon settlement nearby was Waterflow, which still appears on maps today.
In 1928, a Mormon meetinghouse in Kirtland was officially opened by Heber J. Grant, another important Mormon leader.
The town of Kirtland officially became an incorporated town in January 2015. This happened after local residents voted 80 to 40 in favor of becoming a town.

In the year 2000, when Kirtland was still a larger census-designated place, there were 6,190 people living there. These people lived in 1,822 households, and 1,517 of these were families.
About half of the households (50.5%) had children under 18 living with them. Most households (61.6%) were married couples living together.
The population was quite young, with 36.4% of residents under the age of 18. The average age of people in Kirtland was 27 years old.
