Japan prov map Kitami
This map from around 1869 shows Kitami Province (highlighted in red) on the island of Hokkaido. The green area was added later.

Kitami Province was an old region in Japan, located on the large northern island of Hokkaido. It was one of the many areas created in Japan long ago. Kitami Province existed for a short time, from 1869 to 1882.

The borders of this old province are similar to what we now call Sōya Subprefecture and Abashiri Subprefecture today. These are modern administrative areas in Hokkaido.

History of Kitami Province

After 1869, the northern Japanese island became known as Hokkaido. New smaller regions were created across the island. Kitami Province was one of these new regions. It was officially formed in 1869.

Changes in the Meiji Period

During the Meiji period (1868-1912), Japan went through many big changes. The old provinces of Japan were changed into new areas called prefectures. Maps of Japan, including Kitami Province, were updated in the 1870s.

In 1882, Kitami Province and the other ten provinces of Hokkaido were reorganized. They became part of three larger prefectures: Hakodate Prefecture, Sapporo Prefecture, and Nemuro Prefecture. This change marked the end of Kitami Province as a separate region.
