Klukwan (pronounced Tlákw.aan) is a small community in Alaska, United States. It is called a census-designated place (CDP). Klukwan is unique because it's part of the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area, but it's completely surrounded by the Haines Borough. Think of it like an island of land! In 2020, about 87 people lived there.
History of Klukwan
Klukwan started as a very old village for the Chilkat Tlingit people. They are a group of Native Americans from Alaska. The village was on an important trade route called the Dalton Trail.
In 1880, the U.S. Navy called the village "Chilcat of Klukquan." In the Tlingit language, its name, Tlakw Áan, means "forever village." This is because it has been around for a very long time! Before 1900, there were five Chilkat villages in this area, but Klukwan is the only one still here today.
Geography of Klukwan
Klukwan is located in a beautiful part of Alaska. It is about 21 miles (34 km) northwest of Haines. The village sits on the north side of the Chilkat River, close to the Haines Highway. To its west, you'll find the Covenant Life community.
The Klukwan area covers about 1.9 square miles (4.9 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 1.4 square miles (3.6 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.5 square miles (1.3 square kilometers), is water.
As mentioned, Klukwan is an enclave of Haines Borough, Alaska. This means that even though it's officially in the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area, it's entirely surrounded by the Haines Borough. So, it's cut off from the rest of its own census area.
Population and People
Klukwan has seen its population change over the years. It first appeared on the U.S. Census in 1880 as "Kluckquan." Back then, it had 565 residents, making it the 5th largest community in Alaska!
