The village got its name from a man named John Holly Knapp. He was an important person in the lumber industry, which means he worked with wood and forests.

- Albert R. Hall was a businessman who lived on a farm near Knapp. He was also a politician, serving many terms in the government of both Minnesota and Wisconsin.
- Caroline A. Hall was Albert R. Hall's sister. She lived on the farm with him. Caroline was important because she helped start a group called the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, often called "The Grange." This group helps farmers and their families. When her brother died, she inherited the farm.
