The Knave of Hearts is a character from the famous 1865 book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. He is a playing card character who gets into trouble and is put on trial.

The Knave in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

The Knave of Hearts first appears in chapter 8 of the book. He becomes very important in chapters 11 and 12. These chapters describe his trial for supposedly stealing tarts. The King of Hearts acts as the judge during this trial.

Alice, the main character, ends up defending the Knave. She does this because the evidence against him becomes very silly. She is even called as a witness herself.

The White Rabbit announces the charges against the Knave with a poem:

The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts,

All on a summer day:

The Knave of Hearts, he stole those tarts,

And took them quite away!

During the trial, the Knave rarely speaks. The Mad Hatter is called to give his side of the story. However, he spends his time being very nervous in front of the King and Queen. The Duchess's cook is also asked to explain what tarts are made of. Neither witness is very helpful. The Knave also doesn't do a good job of defending himself. He denies writing a mysterious letter that appears in court, even though he knows it isn't signed.

Alice eventually takes over the court's attention. She keeps growing larger and arguing more and more. She argues with the Queen about the idea of "sentence first—verdict afterwards." Before a decision can be made about the Knave's guilt or innocence, Alice grows to her full size. She then bravely calls everyone in the court "nothing but a pack of cards!"

Crispin Glover played the Knave of Hearts in the 2010 Tim Burton film Alice in Wonderland. In this movie, his real name is Ilosovic Stayne. He is a very tall character who wears a heart-shaped eye patch over a scar on his left eye.

In the film, the Knave works for the Red Queen. He is like her personal helper and fighter. Even though he works for her, Stayne secretly dislikes the Queen. He uses her fears to keep his important position.

During a big battle between the Red Queen's army and the White Queen's army, the Knave of Hearts fights against the Mad Hatter. After Alice defeats a creature called the Jabberwocky, Stayne is sent away with the Red Queen. He tries to hurt the Red Queen, but the Mad Hatter stops him. As they are taken away, the Red Queen shouts that he tried to harm her. The Knave of Hearts even asks the White Queen to end his life.

He is also a main bad guy in the video game based on the movie. In the sequel movie, Alice Through the Looking Glass, the Knave's bones are seen. This suggests that he eventually got his wish to die.

Once Upon a Time TV Series

  • The Knave of Hearts appears in two episodes of the TV show Once Upon a Time. He is played by Paul McGillion. In this show, he takes the place of the White Rabbit. He acts as a messenger for the Queen of Hearts. She talks to him by whispering through a horn to hide who she is.
  • A different version of the Knave of Hearts appears in the show's spin-off, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. He is played by Michael Socha. This Knave was brought to a town called Storybrooke, Maine, by a magic curse. Later, the White Rabbit helps him rescue Alice. His heart had been taken by Cora (who is also the Queen of Hearts). Alice found his heart during her earlier adventures in Wonderland. This Knave of Hearts is also known as Will Scarlet. He had gone to Wonderland with a woman named Anastasia, who later became the Red Queen.
