Knonau is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Affoltern district. It's part of the canton of Zürich in Switzerland.
Knonau's History
Knonau is quite old! The first time it was ever written about was in the year 1045. Back then, its name was spelled Chnonowa. Later, in 1223, people started spelling it Knonowe.
Where is Knonau?
Knonau covers an area of about 6.5 square kilometers (which is about 2.5 square miles). A big part of this land, about 64.5%, is used for farming. This means it has fields where crops are grown or animals graze.
About 17.7% of Knonau is covered by forests. Another 16% of the land has buildings and roads on it, where people live and work. The rest, a small 1.8%, is made up of things like rivers or mountains that aren't used for farming or building.
The municipality also includes smaller villages called hamlets, like Baregg and Uttenberg. Knonau is right on the edge of the Canton of Zug.

As of 31 December 2020, Knonau has a population of 2,369 people. About 9.3% of the people living there are from other countries. Over the last 10 years, the number of people living in Knonau has grown quite a lot, by about 34.6%.
Most people in Knonau speak German, which is about 92.9% of the population. Italian is the second most common language, spoken by 2.6% of people, and English is third, spoken by 1.1%.
In 2007, the most popular political party in Knonau was the SVP, which got 36.2% of the votes. Other popular parties included the CSP, the SPS, and the FDP.

Getting Around Knonau
Knonau has its own train station. It's a stop on the Zürich S-Bahn S5 line. You can get to Zürich Hauptbahnhof, a big train station in Zurich, in about 39 minutes from Knonau.
