Horsethief Days Festival
Knox is known in the local area as "The Horsethief Capital of the World." This is because of its special yearly festival called Horsethief Days. This festival happens during the last week of August.
History of Horsethief Days
The Horsethief Days festival started because of a person named Sebastian (Boss) Buck. He was known for stealing horses. He would change their appearance so their original owners wouldn't recognize them. Then, he would sell them. Boss Buck and his group would sell horses in both the North and the South.
Even though he didn't have much schooling, Boss Buck was very smart. He was the leader behind this horse-stealing operation. For a while, his horse-stealing business went unnoticed. This made it easy for him to make money. He even had others bring stolen horses to Clarion County, which was like his main base.
Boss Buck never worked alone; he always had others with him when he stole horses. Eventually, the police found out about his activities and tried to arrest him. He went into hiding for a while. After the police stopped looking for him as actively, he came out and started stealing horses again. He was considered a top criminal in the United States at one point. Finally, he was caught and arrested. After he was released from jail, he lived a normal life and stopped stealing horses. The Horsethief Days festival remembers this interesting part of the county's past.
