Kofi Burbridge (born September 22, 1961 – died February 15, 2019) was an amazing American musician. He was best known for playing keyboards and flute in the popular blues and blues rock group, the Tedeschi Trucks Band.
Kofi was a very talented musician. He learned to play many instruments. He played keyboards, organ, and flute. He also sang backing vocals for several bands. Before joining the Tedeschi Trucks Band, he was part of the Grammy Award-winning Derek Trucks Band.
Kofi was the brother of bass player Oteil Burbridge. Oteil is famous for his work with bands like the Allman Brothers Band. Oteil said Kofi was his biggest influence. Kofi was found to have perfect pitch when he was about seven years old. This means he could identify musical notes just by hearing them.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Kofi Burbridge was born in the Bronx, New York. This was on September 22, 1961. His parents were William and Carol Burbridge. When Kofi was two, his family moved to Washington, D.C..
Kofi joined his first band in the Atlanta area. It was called Knee-Deep. His brother Oteil and drummer Jeff Sipe were also in the band. Knee-Deep broke up after less than a year. But it helped Kofi meet other great musicians.
He later joined the Aquarium Rescue Unit. This band reunited him with his brother Oteil and Jeff Sipe.
Playing with The Derek Trucks Band
Kofi joined the Derek Trucks Band in 1999. Both Derek Trucks and Kofi's brother Oteil were members of the Allman Brothers Band. Kofi sometimes played as a guest with the Allman Brothers Band too.
In 2010, Derek Trucks decided to take a break from his solo band. He then started a new group with his wife, Susan Tedeschi. This new band was called the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Both Kofi and Oteil Burbridge became members of this exciting new group.
Success with The Tedeschi Trucks Band
Kofi joined his brother Oteil in the Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2010. This new band brought together members from the Derek Trucks Band. It also included musicians from Susan Tedeschi's old band.
The band played at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2010. They performed two of their songs, "Midnight in Harlem" and "Comin' Home." These performances are on the festival's DVD.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band released their first album, Revelator, in 2011. This album was a big hit! It won a Grammy Award for Best Blues Album. This was at the 54th Grammy Awards.
In 2012, they released their second album, Everybody's Talkin'. This was a double live album. It featured songs from their 2011 world tour. Their third album, Made Up Mind, came out in August 2013.
Later Life and Passing
On June 20, 2017, Kofi Burbridge had a heart attack. He needed surgery to fix an aortic rupture. After four months of getting better, Kofi returned to the band in October 2017.
However, his health problems returned. The band announced this on January 4, 2019. Kofi Burbridge sadly passed away on February 15, 2019. He was 57 years old. On the same day, the Tedeschi Trucks Band released their fourth album, Signs.
