History of Kohler Village

Kohler was first known as Riverside. It was founded in 1900 as a special kind of town called a "model company town." This happened when the Kohler Company built a new factory there.

How Kohler Became a Village

In 1912, Riverside officially became the Village of Kohler. Many of the first homes were built between 1917 and 1931. Today, most of these homes are still owned by the people who live in them. The Kohler Company still helps make sure that new parts of homes and businesses look good and fit the village's style.

The Vision for Kohler

In 1900, the Kohler Company moved its factory to this new spot. The company's leader, Walter J. Kohler Sr., wanted to create "a great American city." He imagined a place where people could own their homes in nice surroundings. This would help them have a good family life.

In 1913, Walter J. Kohler Sr. traveled to Europe. He studied communities built around factories and talked with Sir Ebenezer Howard. Howard was famous for planning "garden cities." Kohler's own planning for the village started in 1917. He even hired the Olmsted Brothers, a famous company that designed landscapes.

Kohler's Special Design

In 1931, a newspaper called the New York Times wrote about Kohler Village. They said it was an "ideal" place where factories and community life mixed well. They described it as a busy factory area surrounded by homes with gardens.

Worker Strikes in Kohler

Sometimes, workers at the Kohler Company had disagreements with the company. They went on strike in 1934, from 1954 to 1965, in 1983, and again in 2015. These strikes caused some changes to how the village operated.
