Koipuram's Past: A Journey Through Time
Koipuram was once a thick forest. It was part of a large forest area that stretched all the way to Kumbanad. The first people to live here were believed to be the Kovilans. They moved from Malabar, which is in the northern part of Kerala.
Early Settlers and Their Temple
The Kovilans moved to central Kerala to keep their families safe. They first settled on the southern bank of the Pamba River. They built a temple there, which they had brought with them from Malabar. This temple is now known as the Idanattidam Devi Temple.
Later, the Kovilans moved to the northern bank of the river. They cleared the forest and started farming.
Trade and Influence
Because of the river, trade became very important in Koipuram. A market was held every evening in the southeastern part of Koipuram, which is now called Arattupuzha. As trade grew, the Kovilans became very powerful in the area. They were the main rulers in places near present-day Aranmula.
Enemies often attacked the area because they wanted its wealth and land. But the Kovilans were strong and could not be defeated by other armies in central Kerala.
How Koipuram Got Its Name
The place was first called Kovil-puram because the Kovilans lived there. Later, the name changed to Koipuram. The Kovilans who settled here named their houses "kovilan-veedu," which later became "konjum veedu."
With Nellickal as their main center, the Kovilans created a strong rule. No one could threaten their land. Later, during the time of the British Empire, the Kovilans agreed to be part of the British rule. This was because they had promised loyalty to the Trivandrum Palace, which is now the capital of Kerala.
Palliyodam: The Sacred Snake Boat
The Koipuram palliyodam is a special type of snake boat. For about 20 years, it was shared between two local groups called Karayogams: Koipuram and Nellickal. A Karayogam is like a local council or community group.
Ownership and Legends
Later, due to some disagreements, the Nellickal Karayogam decided not to share the costs anymore. Since then, the Koipuram Karayogam has owned the palliyodam by itself.
There are many stories about the Koipuram palliyodam. One famous story says that the boat once crossed a difficult part of the river, a ridge, all by itself without any help. Some people think this is just a myth, but historians are not sure because there isn't much proof other than old stories.
Boat Race Rivalry
The Koipuram palliyodam has won many races. It is considered one of the best, second only to the Nedumprayar palliyodam. There has been a long rivalry between Koipuram and Nedumprayar. Both boats were very powerful in the famous Aranmula boat race for a long time.
Evidence shows that both these palliyodams are built in a special way called 'ottamanikkaal'. This is a rare and unique style of boat building.
Beautiful Scenery of Koipuram
Koipuram is located on the northern bank of the Pamba River. This gives it amazing views and landscapes.
The "Varattaar" is a river that flows only during certain seasons. It used to be an old path of the Pamba River. It has become narrower now because a bridge was built. The area offers beautiful, peaceful scenery. Here, you can see what a typical Indian village life is like.
