Early Life and Art Beginnings
Konstantin Savitsky's family lived in the building of the Taganrog Gymnasium for Boys. His father worked there as a doctor. The family also rented a summer house nearby. Konstantin spent his childhood and teenage years in Taganrog.
He showed a strong interest in painting from a very young age. He loved to sketch when he was by the Azov Sea with his parents. Drawing lessons at his school were his favorite subject.
When Konstantin was in fifth grade, his life changed suddenly. Both of his parents passed away. His uncle, who lived in what is now Latvia, became his guardian. Savitsky then went to a private boarding school. In 1862, he finished school and moved to Saint Petersburg.
There, he joined The Imperial Academy of Arts. He met many important Russian artists and thinkers. These connections greatly helped the young artist grow.
Becoming a Professional Artist
Savitsky quickly became one of the best students at the Imperial Academy of Arts. He won silver medals for his student paintings. In 1871, he received a gold medal for his painting Cain and Abel.
After finishing his studies, Savitsky traveled abroad for two years. When he returned, he joined the Peredvizhniki group. This was a group of Russian realist artists. They formed an art cooperative because they disagreed with strict art rules. They later became known as the Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions.
One of Savitsky's first paintings from this time was Repairing Railway. This artwork showed the lives of working-class people.
Working on Famous Paintings
Konstantin Savitsky also helped create the famous painting Morning in the Pine Forest. This painting was first shown with two artists' names: Ivan Shishkin and Konstantin Savitsky. People thought Savitsky painted the bears and Shishkin painted the forest. However, later studies showed that both artists made drawings for the pine forest. Savitsky later removed his signature from the painting. Today, it is usually only credited to Shishkin.
Many of Savitsky's painting titles show what his art was about. Titles like Lost all their possessions in the fire, To the War, and Herdsmen tell stories of everyday life.
After graduating, Savitsky spent over 20 years teaching art. He taught at art schools in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Penza. This included the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. In 1897, Konstantin Savitsky became a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
