Kopskiekelwein facts for kids

Kopskiekelwein was a special type of wine made from currants. It was produced a long time ago in a part of Germany called East Prussia.
What is Kopskiekelwein?
This unique wine was made using either blackcurrants or redcurrants. To make it, a special type of yeast from Burgundy was often used. Yeast helps the fruit juice turn into wine through a process called fermentation.
How did it get its name?
The name Kopskiekelwein comes from a funny old saying. In the old Low Prussian language, kopskiekel meant "headfirst" or "topsy-turvy." People joked that if someone drank too much of this wine, they might fall over headfirst! This is how the wine got its playful and memorable name.
Where could you find it?
Kopskiekelwein was very popular in certain pubs and inns. Two famous places where you could try it were the forester's lodge in Moditten and the Four Brothers Inn (Vierbrüderkrug) in Metgethen. Both of these places were located near the city of Königsberg. Sadly, these old buildings were destroyed during World War II and do not exist anymore.
