The Story of Kouts
Long ago, before trains arrived, a man named Bernhardt Kautz moved from Pennsylvania and started a farm where Kouts is today.
When the Chicago and St. Louis Railway came through in 1865, Bernhardt Kautz and his brother-in-law H.A. Wright decided to plan out a town. They also opened a store. The new settlement was first known as Kouts Station.
The town grew slowly at first. But when the Chicago and Erie Railroad built tracks that crossed the first railway in Kouts, the town became a busy center. It quickly grew into an important place for business and community life in the area.
Kouts and the Railroads
Kouts was a very important railroad town for many years, especially in the first half of the 1900s. It was served by major train lines like the Erie Lackawanna Railway and the Pennsylvania Railroad.
However, over time, train traffic in Kouts started to slow down. This happened as big railroad companies faced problems and merged with others. Eventually, the train lines in Kouts were no longer used for regular service.
Today, you won't see many trains passing through Kouts. But there is still a reminder of its railroad past: the old Pennsylvania Railroad train station. It has been turned into a private business.
