Professional Football Career
The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Koy Detmer in 1997. He spent ten years playing for the Eagles. For most of his career, he was a backup quarterback. He often played behind star quarterback Donovan McNabb. Detmer also had an important role as the holder for place-kicks. He held the ball for Pro Bowl kicker David Akers.
Playing as a Starter
Detmer started only a few games during his NFL career. He started five games in the 1998 season. In 2002, he started one game when McNabb was injured. In that game, Detmer played very well. He completed 18 of 26 passes for 227 yards. He also scored three touchdowns, two passing and one rushing. He dislocated his elbow in the fourth quarter of that game.
Later Career and Retirement
The Eagles released Detmer before the 2006 season. They later re-signed him in January 2007. This was to help the team during their playoff run. He also continued his role as the kick holder.
In November 2007, Detmer briefly joined the Minnesota Vikings. He was needed as a backup quarterback. This was his only time playing for a team other than the Eagles. The Vikings released him a few days later.
Koy Detmer played in 103 NFL games. He finished his career with 10 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Even with these numbers, he played for 11 years. This was largely because he was very good at holding for place-kicks. His coaches and teammates praised his skill in this area.
