Koy Detmer's Professional Football Career

Koy Detmer was chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round of the 1997 NFL Draft. He played for the Eagles for ten years. For most of his career, he was a backup quarterback. He also had an important job as the person who holds the ball for David Akers when he kicks field goals.

Koy started only a few games during his time with the Eagles. In 1998, he started five games. In 2002, he started one game when the main quarterback, Donovan McNabb, was injured. Koy played very well in that game. He completed 18 out of 26 passes for 227 yards. He also scored three total touchdowns (two passing and one rushing).

However, he dislocated his elbow in that same game. Another player, A. J. Feeley, took his place. Even though Koy healed, the coach decided to stick with Feeley because he was playing well. Koy also played a bit in the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

Before the 2006 season, the Eagles let Koy go. But they re-signed him on January 2, 2007. They needed another quarterback for the playoffs because Donovan McNabb was injured. He also continued his important role as the kick holder.

Koy's NFL career continued for a few more days in 2007. He signed with the Minnesota Vikings on November 6, 2007. The Vikings needed a backup quarterback because their main players were injured. This was the first time Koy played for a team other than the Eagles. The Vikings released him a few days later, on November 10, 2007, when their injured quarterback was ready to play again.

In his NFL career, Koy Detmer played in 103 games. He had 10 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Even though his passing numbers weren't super high, he had a long 11-year career. This was largely because he was very good at holding the ball for place-kicks. His coaches and teammates praised his skill in this area.
