Krigia biflora, also known as the two-flower cynthia or two-flower dwarf dandelion, is a cool plant that belongs to the sunflower family. It grows naturally in North America, especially in parts of Canada (like Manitoba and Ontario) and many areas of the United States.

What is Krigia biflora?

This plant is a perennial, which means it lives for more than two years. It stands tall, usually between 18 to 32 inches (about 45 to 80 centimeters) high. One Krigia biflora plant can have 20 or more flower heads. Often, you'll see two flower heads on each stem, which is why it's called "two-flower"!

What Do Its Flowers Look Like?

Each flower head has about 25 to 60 bright yellow or orange-yellow ray flowers. These flowers are about 1 to 1.5 inches (25 to 38 millimeters) wide. Unlike some other plants in the sunflower family, Krigia biflora does not have disc flowers in the center of its flower heads.

Where Does It Grow?

Krigia biflora is found in the eastern, central, and southwestern parts of the United States. It also grows in central Canada. This plant can grow in many different types of places and soils. It blooms from late spring all the way through late summer. In Connecticut, this plant is quite rare. It is listed as a "species of special concern," which means people are working to protect it.

How Did It Get Its Name?

The name Krigia biflora has a special meaning. The first part, Krigia, is named after David Krieg. He was a German doctor who was the first person to collect this plant in Maryland. The second part, biflora, is a Latin word that means "two-flowered." This makes sense because, as we learned, it often has two flowers on each stalk!
