About Krzysztof Zanussi
Krzysztof Zanussi was born in 1939 in Warsaw, Poland. He was the only child of Jerzy and Wanda Zanussi. His father was an engineer with Italian family roots.
Zanussi studied physics at Warsaw University and philosophy at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. He then went on to graduate from the well-known National Film School in Łódź in 1967.
He has led the Polish Film Studio TOR. This studio helped filmmakers have some freedom during the Communist era, even with government censors watching. Zanussi has won many awards for his work. These include the David di Donatello Prize from Italy and special honors from Poland and France.
Krzysztof Zanussi has also written books about filmmaking. He wrote "On editing an amateur film" (1968) and "Discourse on an amateur film" (1978). He also wrote a book of his memories called "The Time to Die" (1997). He even appeared as himself in the movie Camera Buff (1979). This film was about an amateur filmmaker and was directed by his friend Krzysztof Kieślowski.
His film The Constant Factor (1980) won a special award at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival. In the 1980s, he spent a lot of time working in Western countries. One of his films from this time was From a Far Country: Pope John Paul II (1981). This movie was about the life of Karol Wojtyła (who became Pope John Paul II) and the history of modern Poland. His 1989 film Inventory was shown at the 16th Moscow International Film Festival.
His 2002 film The Supplement also won an award at the 24th Moscow International Film Festival. Zanussi has said that his 1996 film, At Full Gallop, is his most personal movie. It shows parts of his own childhood in Poland after World War II, when the country was under Communist rule.
In 2012, he received a Lifetime Achievement award at the 43rd International Film Festival of India.
In the late 1980s, Zanussi helped start the European Film Academy with famous director Ingmar Bergman. This academy helps promote European movies, especially those not in English. He is also the honorary president of the Italian People and Religions – Terni Film Festival. He has helped create a network of religious film festivals across Europe.
