Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Kitsap, also known as Ktsap, was an important war chief of the Suquamish Native American tribe. He was a very powerful leader in the Puget Sound area from around 1790 to 1845. Today, Kitsap County, Washington and the Kitsap Peninsula are named after him. He was also an ancestor of Johnny Kitsap, who was known as Chief Kitsap in 1908.

Early Life and Leadership

Most of what we know about Kitsap comes from stories passed down through generations. This is because he was famous before European settlers arrived in the Puget Sound. Some stories say he might have been one of the Native Americans who met Captain George Vancouver. This happened when Vancouver explored Puget Sound on his ship, HMS Discovery.

Kitsap was known as one of the best war chiefs of the Suquamish people. Some sources suggest he was the one who had Old Man House built. This was the largest longhouse in Puget Sound, located near Agate Pass.

Forming a Great Alliance

At one point, Kitsap led the biggest alliance of different tribes ever seen in the Puget Sound area. Around 1825, the local Native American tribes usually acted as separate groups. But they came together under Kitsap's leadership. Their goal was to fight against the Cowichan Tribes from southeast Vancouver Island. The Cowichan often raided the Puget Sound region.

However, Kitsap's group of canoes was not as strong as the larger canoes of the Cowichan. After a big sea battle, Kitsap's forces had many losses and had to retreat. Kitsap was one of the few who survived this difficult fight.

Family Connections

Some historical accounts suggest that Kitsap was the brother of Schweabe. Schweabe was the father of the famous leader, Chief Seattle. This connection shows how important Kitsap's family was among the Suquamish people.

Another Chief Kitsap

There was another important leader also named Kitsap. This Kitsap was from the Muckleshoot tribe. He played a big role in the Indian War of 1855–1856. Like his friend, Chief Leschi, this Kitsap was arrested for his part in the fighting. However, he was found not guilty.

This Muckleshoot Kitsap was known for saying he had special healing powers. He also claimed that no one could kill him. But he died in 1860 shortly after returning to his tribe. Some of his tribesmen had become sick and died after he gave them a red liquid as medicine. Their relatives were very upset and caused his death.
