Kuldeep Muralidhar Pai, known as Kuldeep M Pai, is an Indian musician. He was born on January 9, 1982. He is a composer, a singer of Carnatic music, and a music producer. Many of his videos feature children performing. These videos are released through his own company, Chith Studios.

Early Life and Learning

Kuldeep Pai was born in Thammanam, a neighborhood in Kochi city. Kochi is in the state of Kerala, India. His mother's name is V. S. Vijayakumari, and his father is G. Muralidhar Pai. His first language is Konkani. He also has a younger sister.

School and College

Pai went to St. Jude's school and CCPLM Anglo Indian High School. He completed his Pre-university course (PUC) at Cochin College in Kerala. He earned a bachelor's degree in Computer Applications from BPC College Piravom in Kochi. In 1999, he won the 'Kala Pratibha' Award at the Mahatma Gandhi University Youth Festival. This award recognizes artistic talent.

He also earned a gold medal in Masters of Indian Classical Music from the University of Madras. He has a Diploma in Sound Engineering too.

Music Training

Kuldeep Pai received formal training in music from several teachers.

  • He learned Carnatic singing from N. P. Ramaswamy, Antony, and O. S. Thiagarajan.
  • He learned to play the violin from Hariharan.
  • He studied Western Classical Piano with Ramamurthy.
  • He learned to play the Mridangam from four masters: Dennis, Vaikom S. Gopakumar, Kalamandalam Krishnankutty, and Mannargudi Easwaran.
  • He taught himself to play the harmonium and flute.

Music Career

In 2002, Kuldeep Pai moved from Kochi to Chennai with his family. He moved there to start his career in music. He became known as a singer of Carnatic music. He has performed with famous singers like O. S. Arun, S. Janaki, and Vani Jairam. He played the harmonium for nearly 300 of their concerts since 2014.

For about eleven years, he also provided vocal support for Indian classical dance performances. He has sung for a few Indian jingles as well. Since 2015, he has also started performing online.

Unique Music Projects

Pai is an Ashtavadhani. This means he can perform eight different tasks at once. His album Adviteeya is an experimental Carnatic music album. In this album, he sings while playing his own live accompaniments. He plays instruments like the violin, mridangam, ghatam, kanjira, tabla, harmonium, and melodica. His guru, O. S. Thyagarajan, released this album on November 22, 2006, in Chennai. Singer S. Janaki received the first copy.

Composing and Directing Music

Kuldeep Pai has composed and sung four songs for a movie. This movie, titled “Madly in Love,” was made in Switzerland and is in many languages. He has also composed music for dance dramas. These include “Janani Jagath Karani” and “Sri Krishna Vaibhavam.” These dramas were produced by Sri Devi Nrithyalaya.

He has also arranged famous songs and stotras (devotional verses) for his YouTube series. This series is called 'Vande Guru Paramparaam'. Young artists like Rahul Vellal have sung these songs. Some of the songs include Ganesha Pancharatnam, Shivashtakam, and Mahalakshmi Ashtakam. He is also learning Western Classical music. He has composed many Sanskrit songs, including Ashtakam, which was written by Adiguru Shankaracharya.

Awards and Recognition

Kuldeep Pai has received several awards for his musical talent.

  • In 2008, he received the D. K. Pattammal award of excellence from Karthik Fine Arts.
  • In 2007, he was given the “Yuvakalabharathi” award from Bharath Kalachar.
  • He also received the 'Social Harmony Award' in music, arts, and culture. This award was given at the International Convention of Peacemakers for Universal Harmony in Goa.
