Kulyaling, once known as Kulyalling, is a small town in Western Australia. It is located in the Wheatbelt region. You can find it just off the Great Southern Highway, between the towns of Brookton and Pingelly.

Discovering Kulyaling's Past

Kulyaling started out as a railway siding called Westbrook in 1905. A railway siding is a short track next to a main railway line, used for trains to stop or pass each other. Local people wanted a town to be officially created there.

How Kulyaling Became a Town

In 1906, the area was officially declared a townsite and named Westbrook. However, the government's Lands Department found that the name Westbrook was already being used somewhere else. So, they needed a new name for the town.

They thought about two Aboriginal names: Nimbedilling and Colyalling. In 1907, the name was officially changed to Kulyaling, and the town was declared again.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The name Kulyaling comes from an Aboriginal word. It refers to a local water source and a rock formation in the area. However, the exact meaning of the name is not known today.
