Wagin was a special area in Western Australia where people voted for their representative in the state government. This area was called an electoral district. It was part of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia.

The Wagin district existed for two main periods. First, from 1911 to 1950. Then, it was brought back from 1989 to 2017. The district got its name from the town of Wagin. It covered parts of the Wheatbelt region. Wagin was known as a safe seat for the National Party. This means the National Party usually won elections there easily.

The History of Wagin's Voting Area

First Period: 1911 to 1950

The Wagin electoral district was first created for the state election in 1911. For a long time, Sydney Stubbs was the person elected to represent Wagin. He was the member from 1911 until 1947. Stubbs represented different conservative political parties during his time.

After Sydney Stubbs, Crawford Nalder became the member for Wagin. Nalder later became a leader of the Country Party. The Wagin district was stopped before the 1950 state election. Crawford Nalder then became the member for a different area called Katanning.

Second Period: 1989 to 2017

The Wagin electoral district was created again for the 1989 state election. The first person to represent the recreated Wagin was Bob Wiese. He was a member of the National Party. Before Wagin was recreated, Bob Wiese represented the Narrogin district. Wagin largely took the place of Narrogin.

Bob Wiese was followed by Terry Waldron. Terry Waldron was also a National Party member. He became the representative for Wagin after the 2001 state election. Waldron held the seat until Wagin was stopped again. This happened because of changes to the voting areas before the 2017 state election.

The land that used to be Wagin was then split up. It became part of other voting areas. These new areas included Albany, Central Wheatbelt, Roe, and Warren-Blackwood.

Where Wagin Was Located

In its last period, Wagin was a very large rural area. It was in the southern part of the Wheatbelt region. Many towns were part of the Wagin district. These included Cuballing, Boddington, Brookton, Corrigin, Gnowangerup, Hyden, Lake Grace, Katanning, Kojonup, Narrogin, and Wagin.
