Kundana is what we call a "ghost town" in Western Australia. It's a place that used to be a busy town but is now mostly empty. You can find Kundana in the Goldfields–Esperance region, which is known for its history of gold mining. It's located about 28 kilometers north of Coolgardie and a long way, 586 kilometers, east-northeast of Perth.

Kundana: An Old Gold Rush Town

Kundana was officially started in 1897. This happened after 58 miners asked the government to make it a proper town in 1896. These miners were hoping to find their fortune in gold.

How Kundana Got Its Name

The area where Kundana is located had many different names before it got its current one. When a prospector named Barker first found gold there, people called it Barkers Find. Later, it was known simply as 21 mile.

When the land was being measured and mapped out in 1896, the surveyor used the name White Flag, which was also a common name for the spot. After that, the surveyor general suggested the name Barkerton.

Finally, the surveyor, H. S. King, suggested the name Kundana. This name comes from an Aboriginal word, though its exact meaning is not known today.
