Kuuma koira is a special fast food dish from Finland. It was created in the 1960s in the Finnish city of Nokia. The name Kuuma koira means "Hot dog" in Finnish. However, this dish is very different from a regular hot dog!
Kuuma koira is not well known outside the Pirkanmaa region of Finland. But in Nokia, they celebrate it every year. They even have an International Kuuma koira day in March. On this day, thousands of Kuuma koiras are eaten at local grills.
What Makes Kuuma Koira Special?
Imagine a sweet jelly doughnut. Now, imagine that doughnut is cut open. Inside, you'll find a tasty sausage. Then, it's topped with classic hot dog sauces like mustard and ketchup. You might also find pickle relish and chopped onions. It's a mix of sweet and savory that makes it truly unique!
How Kuuma Koira Was Invented
The idea for Kuuma koira came from a man named Teodor Leppänen. He owned a fast food grill in Nokia in the 1960s. He used to sell apple jelly doughnuts with coffee. He also sold steamed sausages.
One story says that Teodor had some extra doughnuts and sausages. To avoid wasting them, he decided to put them together. And just like that, Kuuma koira was born! Other grill owners in the area soon started making it too. It quickly became a popular local fast food item.
Kuuma Koira's Rise to Fame
For a long time, Kuuma koira was mostly a local secret. But in the late 2000s, it became famous across Finland. This happened thanks to a TV show called "Ennätystehdas" on MTV3. On the show, a man named Mikko Salonen from Nokia ate four and a half Kuuma koiras in just 5 minutes! This set a new official record.
Around the same time, the first International Kuuma koira day was held. These events helped everyone in Finland learn about this unique dish. Later, in 2016, a Finnish fast food TV show called "Grillit Huurussa" on Nelonen also featured Kuuma koira. This made it even more popular!
