The Sweet History of Jelly Doughnuts
The first time we find a record of a jelly doughnut was in a Polish book called Kuchmistrzostwo. This book was a translation of a German cookbook published way back in 1532. We're not totally sure if that's exactly when jelly doughnuts were invented.
Back then, they were known as Gefüllte Krapfen. Over the next 100 years, they became popular across Europe. Sometimes they had different fillings, because sugar and jelly were hard to find. But later, sugar plantations in the Caribbean made sugar and jelly much easier to get.
Jelly Doughnuts Around the World
Jelly doughnuts are enjoyed in many countries, each with its own special twist!
Australia's Hot Jam Doughnuts
In Australia, especially in Victoria, hot jam doughnuts are super popular. You can often find them at fairs and markets. They are also commonly sold from food trucks. These doughnuts are similar to the ones found in Germany and America. However, they use more yeast in the dough. They are always served very hot, so hot that people often burn their tongue on the jam!
Jelly Doughnuts in the United States
In the United States, jelly-filled doughnuts are a favorite treat. They are often enjoyed as a snack. People love making them from scratch at home. They are also a popular item at many doughnut shops across the country.
Israel's Hanukkah Treat: Sufganiyot
In Israel, jelly- or custard-filled doughnuts are called sufganiyot in Hebrew. These delicious doughnuts are a very popular treat during the holiday of Hanukkah. They are cooked in oil, which connects to the holiday's theme. Hanukkah celebrates a miracle where a small amount of oil kept a sacred lamp burning for eight days.
