Exploring the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship
This region is located in central Poland. It's known for its rich history and beautiful landscapes. The name "Kuyavian-Pomeranian" comes from two older regions: Kuyavia and Pomerania.
How the Region is Organized
The Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship is divided into smaller areas called counties, or powiats. There are 23 of these counties in total.
- City counties: Four of these are cities that act as their own counties. These are Bydgoszcz, Toruń, Włocławek, and Grudziądz.
- Land counties: The other 19 are rural areas with towns.
These counties are then split even further into 144 smaller local areas called gminas.
Major Cities in the Region
The two main cities are Bydgoszcz and Toruń. They share the role of capital.
- Bydgoszcz is the largest city in the region. It's where the governor, called the Voivode, has their office. It's a busy city with a lot of industry and culture.
- Toruń is famous for its beautiful medieval old town. It's also the birthplace of the famous astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. The regional assembly, which makes laws for the area, meets here.
- Włocławek is another important city, known for its cathedral and history.
- Grudziądz is a historic city located on the Vistula River, famous for its old granaries.
